Can I connect my own tachometer or strobe to the tach input of my vb portable instrument?

ANSWER


Yes, it is possible to use many different tachometers or strobes with the vbSeries instrument.


Pre-made cables

By far the easiest way to connect another tachometer is to purchase a purchase a pre-made cable. The following cables can be purchased from your Commtest representative. Please refer to our Accessories page for more information.

Making your own cable


Custom cables can be assembled as required, however due to the small size and complicated assemble of the tachometer connectors, it is highly recommended that one purchases a standard tachometer cable, remove the M12 connecter and wire to requirements.

Wiring Information


The pins of the tach connector are connected internally to the vb instrument as follows:


 



   1. Tach +    Positive tachometer input from sensor (isolated from instrument supply)    

2. Supply -  Supply return     

3. Tach -     Negative tachometer input from sensor (isolated from instrument supply)     

4. Supply + Sensor power supply* / Strobe output


* The Sensor Power Supply varies and can be identified by instrument serial number All vb1000, 2000, 3000:  6 to 9 Volts (Battery voltage) @100mA max Up to 40800:  7 to 8.4 Volts (Battery voltage) @50mA max 40800 and Higher:  5 Volts @ 50mA max

Cable Pinouts


The input circuit of the vbSeries instruments is the same as the vbOnline instrument. For further wiring information and sensor examples, please refer to the vbOnline Tachometer Setup FAQ.

Strobe output


When wiring a strobe output, the use the following configuration
      

 1. Tach +              Not Connected     

2. Supply -           Strobe Ground     

3. Tach -               Not Connected     

4. Supply +           Strobe Trigger     

A 100 ohm resistor is also required between Strobe Trigger and Strobe Ground.
